Join the Deanery-wide Synodality Reading Group meeting online once a week for six weeks starting 15th September, 7pm.

The idea is to receive and digest the Final Document of the worldwide Synod on Synodality, which invites us to create room for the Spirit to guide the Church in our changing world.

Dear friends in Christ,

What a wonderful event the Parish BBQ was last Sunday. We were really blessed with the weather since the rain held off until 4pm long after everything had been tidied up. A big thank you to Tim and Fran Smallwood for manning the barbecues and of course, to the whole Fete and Events Team for all the hard work in putting on the event. It was great that the monks were able to join us and socialise with those who attend the Parish Masses on a Sunday.

Another fantastic event that took place this week was the special Day of Creation, organised by our CAFOD group. The different stations that were set up around the garden have now been placed in the Memorial Altar Chapel for the Season of Creation. The theme of Living Water permeates the three stations. The first is a reflection on how water is used in the Bible. The second is a depiction of how Christ is the firstborn of all creation and in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. He is before all things and in him all things hold together. The final picture shows Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well. Christ is the living water through which we gain eternal life. Thank you particularly to Helen Jenkins and the rest of the CAFOD group for organising this amazing and reflective day on the importance of water and the whole of creation.

This week the Community has its Annual Retreat which is why there is no Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesday. Please be aware that during the retreat, the other monks and I will not be as available.

Assisted Suicide Bill - Message from Archbishop Mark

There will be a Second Reading and vote in the House of Commons for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life Bill) on 11th September. As Catholics, we oppose this legislation since it attacks the innate dignity of every person. It is also very poorly written and gives no safeguards to healthcare staff, nursing homes, or hospices, all of whom will be pressured to implement the bill if the legislation is passed. I encourage all Catholics to write to their MP. The Bishops' Conference has information available on its website at: https://www.cbcew.org.uk/opposing-assisted-suicide/. On the page, there are various resources, copies of statements and guidance on writing to your MP, and please, please do so, to protect the most vulnerable in our society.

Meetings are on Wednesdays 11am–12noon : LECTIO DIVINA: Meetings are on Wednesdays 11am–12noon, the next is on 22nd July in The Chapterhouse.

This is a way of opening our hearts to reading scripture in the Holy Spirit.

It is an ancient

practice, commended by St Benedict in his Rule. Lectio, whether in a group or on your own, begins with prayer, and then focuses on a brief passage of scripture. Read it several times, silently or aloud, and just allow yourself to sit with it. Be open to the Holy Spirit and to the Word of God - allowing yourself to be moved by it.

Let it resonate with you and think about what it is saying to you. This helps us grow in love of scripture, and is a way of growing into prayer.

Archdiocese Mission Event - Hereford

27th-28th June 2026 Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) have been invited to run a mission throughout the Archdiocese. They are a Canadian based Catholic movement raising up Christ-centred, Spirit-filled leaders with the aim to evangelise the world one person at a time.

Two events which are taking place in Hereford are:

• ‘Learning to Pray’ taking place at Belmont Abbey on 27th June 2026. This is a day for everyone interested in deepening their prayer life, led by the CCO founder, Andre Regnier.

• Parish Evangelisation Day at St Francis Xavier’s, Hereford on 28th June 2026. A day of formation and evangelisation for those in Herefordshire.

Receiving the Synod: What happens in our parish? The 3-year 'Synod on Synodality', one of the most important events in the life of the modern Church, concluded at the end of October with a big assembly of bishops and others in Rome. It was an important event in the life of the church, but we might wonder what difference it makes, and if it matters to us at all. One of the ‘experts’ at the assembly, Dr Austen Ivereigh, will help our parishes receive the fruits of the synod in two separate sessions at Hedley Lodge, Belmont Abbey.

We had had a number of emails relating to the Working Document, saying it was too long and not easy to read. There was a call for a shorter and simpler version.

The Diocesan Synodal Team (DST) recognised that it is actually a beautiful document but felt that we had to answer the call. A member of the DST spent considerable time writing. a shorter and simpler version.

Event: Gather the fruits of Heart Speaks to Heart

Saturday, 23rd May, from 10.00am (coffee) until 12:30pm

Come and help GATHER THE FRUITS of our deanery’s HEART SPEAKS TO HEART six-week programme of parish meetings on the call by Pope Leo and Archbishop Mark to become synodal and missionary.

After Abbot Brendan leads us in a time of prayer, we will hear from each parish about what arose from its meetings, then reflect together on next steps in small groups, using Conversation in the Spirit.

The eve-of-Pentecost celebration will take place in The Chapterhouse, Belmont Abbey, on Saturday, 23rd May, from 10.00am (coffee) until 12:30pm, followed by CAFOD lunch for those who want to stay. (Once again, you do not need to have attended the meetings to come to this — all are welcome).

Catholic Choral Music -Youth

Participate in a dynamic and enriching musical experience by singing a thoughtfully curated mixture of both traditional and modern Catholic choral repertoire.

This takes place during a regular monthly Sunday morning Mass at 11 am, specifically on the second Sunday of each month. The setting for this uplifting event is the beautiful and historic Belmont Abbey, which provides a traditional backdrop that enhances the sacred atmosphere of the worship service. Join us in this harmonious celebration of faith and music, where voices unite in reverence and joy. All are welcome.

JOIN US -LECTIO DIVINA: This is a way of opening our hearts to reading scripture in the Holy Spirit. It is an ancient practice, commended by St Benedict in his Rule. Lectio, whether in a group or on your own, begins with prayer, and then focuses on a brief passage of scripture. Read it several times, silently or aloud, and just allow yourself to sit with it. Be open to the Holy Spirit and to the Word of God - allowing yourself to be moved by it. Let it resonate with you and think about what it is saying to you. This helps us grow in love of scripture, and is a way of growing into prayer.

Meetings are on Wednesdays 11am–12noon : 27th May, 24th June, both in the Parish Centre, 22nd July in The Chapterhouse (all three are major feasts of the English Church).

St. Benedict poses a fundamental and thought-provoking question to those aspiring to enter a monastery: “Is he genuinely in pursuit of God?”

(“Quaerere Deum”, Chapter 58 of the Rule)

Enquiring candidates must deeply reflect on their intentions and motivations for seeking a monastic life. It challenges them to examine whether their commitment is rooted in a sincere longing for spiritual growth and divine connection, or superficial desires or personal ambitions. By posing this question, St. Benedict encourages candidates to consider the depth of their faith and the authenticity of their journey toward a closer relationship with God.

Our Synod report is now ready for you to see. It has been challenging trying to amalgamate a wide variety of responses, we have tried hard not to leave anything out. It was tricky fitting it into the template we were sent after having distributed our questionnaire!!
